19mm Wide Straight Fine Rake tools

Instead of making one tool with one loop option, I decided to make one in each in the woods I currently work with. Hand wound fine loop and twisted wire medium loop in;

A - English Oak

B - Ebonised Oak

C - Padauk

D - Walnut 

loop width 19mm or 3/4”

length 16cm or 6.25” 

The hand wound end uses 0.4mm piano wire onto a straight edge high carbon loop as opposed to using guitar string because the results are significantly stronger than guitar string. Guitar string, while useful, is extremely flimsy and fairly disposable. 

Another fun tool to use for raking down forms: twisted wire Loops. I use 0.6mm piano wire For these. I love these loops for blending forms prior to using the fine wound loop end for raking down afterwards.

I used small brass upright tubing as supports for each loop to allow the loops themselves to remain a little bit bigger and longer than the wire dictates which means that there is very little flex in them at all. So for their relative size they're very strong and will endure continuous raking of forms. Suitable for oil based clays, polymers and water based clays, this tool and the pitch and depth of the twists in the wire allow for a good amount of material to be refined.
